The collective monograph "21st century Czech society can?t make itself understood by foreigners: what do community interpreters say to that?" is published to mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of university translator and interpreter training in Prague (in the academic year 1963/1964). It presents the recent research of four graduates of the Institute of Translation Studies, at the Faculty of Arts, of Charles University, Prague. This research was the subject of their theses and focuses on community interpreting. In a brief introduction Ivana Čeňková presents the history, status, importance and role of community interpreting in contemporary globalised society. She also pays particular attention to the Institute of Translation Studies and its involvement in the training of qualified community interpreters and cooperation with NGOs which, through projects and grants, can contribute to provision of social services, legal assistance, intercultural mediation and support for interpretation for migrants and foreign nationals.
