Description:
At the end of the 15th century, a work was published in Spain entitled the Tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea, which is partly attributed to Ferdando de Rojas. The book has become known under the name of the main and most important character, La Celestina, and is considered to be one of the best known Spanish literary works of all time. The work appeared at the end of the Middle Ages and thus can be associated with a number of historical and literary processes that took place at that time and determined it. These phenomena include the end of feudalism, the start of the reformation, the black plague pandemic, court literature and questions posed by the humanists. This introduction to the study of La Celestina is intended as a repetition of the main historical codes to prepare the reader for informed historical reading of the work. Thus, it is not meant to answer all the questions that La Celestina evokes, but rather to pose them in such a way that they lead to reading that takes into account the context of the work. For this purpose, there are discussions of mediaeval prostitution, the subject of Spanish religious converts, the instability of the political situation in the 15th century, philosophical streams of thought that are reflected in the text, literary influences and other important circumstances that form the context of this work.
