This volume represents the first complete Czech translation of texts usually classified as skáldpaettir, stories of the skalds, Old Norse court poets. Despite certain fluidity of the subgenre's boundaries, the thirty collected stories lay out its representative overview as well as an important historical document of peculiar Scandinavian medieval phenomenon - panegyric poetry - with all its metrical strenuousness and richly imaginative language, permeated with memories of gods and heroes of the heathen past. Being located - as so many other Old Norse historiographical texts - on the border between what we call historiography and fiction today, skáldpaettir in fact allow both modes of reading. We can perceive them as (cum grano salis!) historiographical records dressed in a literary robe, nevertheless we still can enjoy the craftsmanship of the poets and the literary mastery of the anonymous men recording their stories. Reading this book will, however, best benefit a historical anthropologists as it offers an evidence of importance that poetry could be credited with in an archaic society and its social and economic background.
